Controguerra is a town and commune in the Teramo province of the Italy’s Abruzzo Region.

Controguerra is famous not only for its exceptional DOC wines but also for its panoramic view overlooking the Tronto River Valley.

One of the most interesting places to visit in this town is a large tower called Torrione, built in 1370 on the remains of a Roman building. It stands on what remains of the ancient “palazzo ducale” which was the seat of the families Nanno, Serra and Acquaviva of Atri, who ruled over the whole province.

Visitors should make their way to the Museo della Civiltà Contadina, in nearby San Giuseppe Lavoratore, an ancient farm with an agritouristic center attached. One will find exhibits of tools of the countryside tradition before the Industrial Revolution changed agricultural systems. Several of the exhibits in the museum specifically relate to the growing of canape (hemp) used in the production of rope and cords.  The owner, Amerigo and other members of the Rasicci family also make an excellent vino rosso (red wine).

..Controguerra is home to a famous bed and breakfast that goes by the name Giardino. It is an oasis of peace in Controguerra. A bit to the south lies Teramo, a provincial capital in Italy’s Abruzzo Region. One of Teramo’s suburbs, Valle San Giovanni, is well known as the home of the guesthouse Casale.

Every year Controguerra hosts several town festivals, usually devoted to food and wine.  One of thes is Calici di Stelle (Goblets under the Stars) held in July.  It features local wine and food products.  Another well known activity is the yearly “Festa del Vino.”   In addition to the sampling of the local food and wine, this large festival hosts dancing exhibitons, spoting events, and folklife presentations.
